Weddings
There are various theories as to why it is considered lucky to have a Chimney Sweep attend your wedding.
One theory dates back to a royal procession for King George II where a stray dog nipped the leg of the King’s steed, which in turn, spooked the horse out of control. A Chimney Sweep appeared out of the crowd and brought the horse under control before disappearing back into the crowd again. As the King was not able to thank the sweep personally he instead announced that from that day onward sweeps should be regarded as lucky.
Other theories include the Ancient Roman association between soot and fertility. Vulcan the God of Fire & Forge was married to Venus the Goddess of Love. For centuries the images of fire and hearth have been associated with good luck. Soldiers have carried small lumps of coal into battle and sailors kept coal in their pockets at sea, all for good luck!
Whatever the real reason is, having a lucky chimney sweep attend your wedding is a tradition many couples have to this day.
